Dorothy Halliday was born in 1923 in Scotland. She was educated at the James Gillespie School for Girls, and was a few years younger than Muriel Spark, who based her famous novel The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie on the school.

Dorothy Dunnett was 38 when she turned to writing. She said that after complaining to her husband that she had nothing of interest to read, he suggested she write something herself...

Her first novel - the first of the six book Lymond Chronicles - was snapped up by the legendary American editor Lois Dwight Cole. This was followed by 22 other books.

Dorothy Dunnett's final work – the eight volume House of Niccolo series - was set during the Renaissance. The novels are filled with unforgettable characters, formidable women, dreadful villains, complex plot lines, hilarious set pieces, poetry, and music, all wrapped up in an evocation of history almost magically real.

Dorothy was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and was awarded the OBE in 1992 for her services to literature.
